Horror of Ventus Damned
Since Sui stopped posting new chapters of RM here, but I wouldn't want to ruin his reservation (even though I was the one who wrote all those), then I'll post one of my recent completed short horror drama fiction novel here, which serves as a semi-prequel to RM, in order to gather some feedbacks if able. I'll be posting chapter by chapter, day by day. The first few are put up today just to quickly build up some attention. Note that there are some typos/grammar mistakes, pardon my half-sleepy half-***** writing style and bear with it.
Hour I
- Spoiler:
“That’s just ridiculous.”
“I know, but what else can we do but to believe it?”
“Suicide,”
“Suicide nothing, ain’t no way I’mma let something like this happen without doing anything about it.”
This was probably one of those times that people don’t want to do anything but argue with themselves, simply to try to prolong the mere seconds they used up doing so, meaning ultimately prolonging their ending lives.
Supposedly it started as normal as ever, maybe even better. Here at Ventus’ Capitol High, nothing could start off a school day more perfect than knowing the sky was clear, the sun was shining and your homeroom teacher was not coming. However, obviously the students wouldn’t know that until they were informed. But they never failed to keep their hopes up, just for a day would be good enough.
7 a.m. in the morning, the school gate was opening, just a little bit earlier than usual. In front of the school were none but a few students who cared enough to even be there early. They were entering the school, some with haste and some with slow glides. Among them was a male student with his headphones hanging, guiding his bike into the school’s parking spot at the end of the backyard. With an old stained grey bag on his back, he quietly entered the facility as if no one else even existed. He had an unfocused look in his eyes all the time, with just a little bit of lacking common sense.
It was not like anyone else at this school at the moment cared about him either.
He was just strolling across the yard like any other abnormal student at this school, trying to get to his home room early. However, the point of actually being early was practically non-existent, since no one had much to do at school anyways. Still, there was no rush. None of his friends were going to be there for a while. Silently watching the leaves blowing, Hiraki Gensei didn’t even bother his own existence anymore.
7:10 a.m. A different student appeared on his sight, as Hiraki was casually watching the school ground from the top floor of the classroom building like some dazed idiot. This one had more than an attitude anybody would hope not to meet, or so he appeared. Also with headphones dangling around his ears; he came out as someone who would stay awake all night just drowning in his own perpetual sorrow. Along with his normally depressed face, he walked straight up and snuck a greeting.
“’Early as usual I see.”
“Oh it’s you…so, anything new today?”
“Not really, was tired last night. Got tired, couldn’t write anymore.”
“And here I was hoping for something interesting to read in the morning. Schoolbooks bring me to absolute boredom.” Their casual conversation could have not been less normal. Of course, that didn’t mean things were boring for them. It’s just that they like to pretend it’s that way.
“Busy, alright? Bah, get inside already, somebody looking up is going to mistake you for a stalker.” Disturbing enough the second one was right. Despite the yard being an open view from the class halls, staring blankly into it, eye-contacting with every single person your gaze comes across was rather something people would not want to experience.
And with that, both of them entered the homeroom from the long hallway. Having a seat at the back of the class, they were able to talk without drawing much attention. Much didn’t mean attention would come to them. During this time of day, it was perfectly normal to see about 20 students present in the classroom. About two minutes later, came a guy by the name of Kyouiku, who looked a lot more than an underdeveloped bastion, than anything else. He sat down firmly and comfortably into a seat that everyone knew was not his, which happened to be right next to Hiraki’s.
“Yoh Hiraki, what’s up?”
“’Sup dude, nothing new today I guess.” Hiraki answered. Despite still having the unfocused eyes, he looked to be concentrating on something at the very least. Kyouiku noticed that too. He knew better than to interrupt Hiraki’s music dose, which was probably 90% percent of the time his sudden interest.
“Well yeah, nothing seems to be new here either. Guess I’m stuck with my mobile phone again.”
“It is better not be that crappy D*raem*n thing again.”
“No, this time I’m going for some Sim*leans.”
“Lemme guess, you’re just going to play it until 1st period starts?”
“You know it!”
Hiraki gave a sigh and turned around. The second one was still there, sitting on the front desk, vividly drowning in his fantasies. Despite that, his eyes weren’t dazed at all. In fact, it was so focused on a blank spot on the wall that sometimes people actually feel intrigued enough to look for where he appeared to be staring at. He suddenly turned around, facing Hiraki directly, causing him to give a small jerk backward.
“Something seems… unusually nice about today, wouldn’t you agree? I can’t say I’m taken back by it or anything though.”
“…did you say something?” Hiraki put off his headphones. Ironically, the other one didn’t.
“Yeah…do you think something about today is different than usual? The weather’s… too nice, the going was too good. Only thing left for this day to be a complete win is for Mr. Haru to be absent.”
“Erm…”
“You weren’t listening, were you?”
“Something’s bothering you Akari?”
“I guess so… maybe I’m just being too paranoid.”
“That doesn’t sound like you at all.”
“O’rly?” Akari faintly smiled. He knew exactly how this conversation would turn out. Though the same topic might not be discussed everyday; they definitely somehow end it up in the same strange fashion: not getting anywhere at all.
That pointless conversation continued for ten more minutes, until suddenly a stuck up looking guy with the large overcoat, on one of the hottest days out there, entered the classroom. He had this huge appearance whenever he walked in the room, probably because of the extra clothing, or that’s what people would want to believe. Though his presence might not strike fear into the minds of others, he truly was strangely respected. Unknown to most, he really wasn’t that big nor that fearsome, just overly arrogant and well-informed.
“’Sup!” He greeted Hiraki and Akari, after sitting down and smashing his head onto the desk.
“Too many sups today, what is this, Sup’s day?” Overwhelmed by the massive amount of information, Hiraki became confused. Though it would be harsh to say he was mentally challenged, one could always question his “brain functions” as a quotation from himself. It was not because he failed in class, but it was because of his unusual take in school life.
“Good morning Taiyo, apparently I can’t say Sup anymore today.” Akari greeted him back. “You look unusually unusual today. Something happened at home throwing you off?”
“Good pun, anyways, S*ra n* *t*shim*n*’s season 2 is coming, ready yourselves mates!” Taiyo, as the guy in the overcoat, proudly announced. He then made a weird expression on his face, very much reminded people of how a pervert would look like at his worst. Being his best friends, Hiraki and Akari knew perfectly well the things that would get him like that. However, little could be done about the fact that they actually enjoy being friends with a guy like that.
“Really, that's sweet!” Hiraki just got all excited again. This topic was a hot one. Living the school life like they did, it’s not hard to find distractions from your study, though easily said those distractions weren’t really bad ones. Since the educational system was simply viewed as flawed, the students find other ways to free themselves from the oppressive grasps of rankings. Obviously that didn’t always work, meaning there would be some who strayed from the path of devotion, into the life of fail living.
“I think this is old news already. You told us this like… a month ago right?” Akari, looking serious all of the sudden, said.
“So? If it’s good news it’s good news, why would I not repeat it? Especially in case you two idiots forgot.”
“Who are you calling an idiot?” Akari instantly grabbed Taiyo’s back and started pulling him towards the wall. It would be obvious if he were to be pressed against the wall and beaten right at the spot. However, Akari whispered at him instead. “By the way, it’s coming out this October right? You got anything stored up? Should you ever get the premium on the OVA, be sure to send it to me alright?”
“Oh, I have something alright, but just let me go first!” Taiyo did clearly not like the idea of being interrogated like this. He fixed his overcoat as soon as Akari let it go. Despite this being probably a 42 degrees day, his 3 layers of clothing didn’t bother him one bit. Needless to say, he had a condition.
Suddenly, someone patted him on the back. Consciously or not, Taiyo immediately flipped his arm backwards, almost hitting the person in the face. Luckily, that person managed to stop him just in time. Turning around, both Akari and Taiyo could clearly see that it was Shiroi, a male classmate. He looks a bit shorter, with an ever so annoying smiley face. Even now that they knew who it was, a part of them still wanted to hit that person. Before they reached that conclusion, he spoke first.
“Sup youths; how’s it going?” Shiroi said his all so annoying catch phrase. No one likes it, but the fact that he keeps repeating it doesn’t help either. Of course, in the end, he was a loveable guy that unknown even to themselves, girls don’t love to like nor love to dislike either. That’s why he got away with most of his “accidents” with female classmates.
Before much could have been said, the first drum sounded, as to announce the beginning of first period, or at least the teachers walking to first period. As slow as ever, the class started as usual, with no one noticing a thing. However, some of the students couldn’t help but feel uneasy. To sum it up, only the ever so depressed Akari would take his mind to worry at a time like this.
If anything, it would be the anxiety that draws out people’s nervousness and insecurities.
Akari sat in class, not paying attention as he usually would. However, this time it wasn’t because of the teacher’s inability to excite his hunger for knowledge, but rather a feeling of vagueness that somehow generalizes the near future of which he’ll have to experience.
On the stand, the teacher continued to gave her speech about the importance of unimportant subject.
Why can’t she just shut up?
He could felt his physical condition getting worse by the second. It was not because of his lack of exercise, but his desire to vomit out his mouth at the very second.
Why am I suddenly like this?
Turning around the classroom, Akari reminded himself of the reason he was here. “It’s all for them” he thought. It wasn’t entirely his upbringing that turned his personality into this extremist he had become. However, not much could have been said now, as it was already too late.
Someone else had also been feeling his vibes. That person was also very close. It almost seemed like Akari had turned into a threat. However, as he calmed down, his consciousness earned back its trust.
Hour II
- Spoiler:
- After first period ended, as soon as the teacher dropped the chock, the students burst right out. 45 minutes of being condemned inside a room is no laughing matter. Bored, tired and exhausted as he is, Akari decided to pick himself up to go one meter behind, next to Nankyokuen. Nan had always been a quiet one, willing to do whatever people asked of him and always getting his just deserved respect. People respected his cool-temper and his friendly attitude, but feared his mysteriousness and shrouded expressions. However, right now, Akari could care less about that. All he was doing was such routine actions that no one bothered asking about it anymore. One desk behind where he was sitting was Taiyo, lying like he’s never slept before in his life. However, sleeping in that position, people would want to kick him awake than to gently shake him up.
“Feeling down lately?” Akari muttered to him.
“I did everything to make it not rain today… but I might have overdone it a little, gonna be down until night man.” Taiyo reluctantly answered. Everyone knew what this “everything” of him was, so nobody bothered reacting to it.
“Wanna go grab a drink? Since you were busy last night, thought you might want some refreshments.” Apparently Hiraki was that nobody. “You are buying, of course.”
“Isn’t it always?” Taiyo lazily pulled himself up and headed down stairs, with Hiraki and Akari right behind him. They left behind the crowded and noisy class; with students running about doing stuff that they would never even consider doing. The Nintend* DS lying somewhere in his pocket almost fell out over, but as far as dropping went, somehow it didn’t happen. They approached the end of the classroom hallway, when Shiroi suddenly ran at them from the back.
“Dudes, why didn’t you tell me you were going down?” Shiroi butted in as usual. It might be annoying, but at least he’s not easily hated for it.
“Maybe because we didn’t want this to happen…” Akari sighed. They knew each other well enough for Shiroi not to take what he just said personally. Instead, he just ran ahead as usual, trying to be the first one down the stairs for some reasons. Medically speaking, he had this thing for being ahead of people, though sometimes it might just cause him to go down, literally. The time going down was somewhat boring, at least during the first floor passed. Their classroom was on the 3rd floor, and there are 3 turning points between the stairs. After the 2nd one, meaning when they got to the 2nd floor, Shiroi suddenly pointed out the window. It seemed he noticed something interesting after all.
“Check it out, today there’re lots of cars here.”
The other three went to the window in the direction of which he was pointing to and took a good look down. He was right. There were many cars, trucks and even taxies lined up on the school’s yard.
The school of Ventus Capitol High was quite a small one, with limited parking spaces and a lot of students, two thousand four hundred and twenty five to be exact, divided into morning and afternoon shifts. No matter how you look at it, when some gathering happens here, the parking spots obviously wouldn’t be enough.
“It seems there is some kind of event happening here today, probably it doesn’t involve us students though.” Akari commented. He has never been interested in any kind of school events. As far as activities go, he had only brought himself to join the school’s E-Sp*rts club, before the club disbanded due to students – teachers’ disagreement on facilities and equipments. It was a bummer too, since he always wanted to show off his skills.
“There is what… almost fifty cars fit in here? I didn’t even realize our yard would have fit so much.” Taiyo for one was taking somewhat of an interest in what was going on. The four focused on the cars, though five seconds afterwards they started walking again. Akari couldn’t get off his mind what would happen if one of these cars were to crash on each other. It would’ve been cool anyway he looked at it.
They continued their stroll downstairs, onto the school ground, where 4 dozens of cars are hanging just in front of them. No matter how interesting this might seemed at first, then it was just really annoying.
“The yard is blocked, let just take the other turn to the history room, nothing’s oughta be blocking that.” Hiraki suggested. Of course any of them would know that obvious fact, but he just liked pointing it out as if it were necessary.
“And here I thought today was a nice day… not.” Akari sighed again. Apparently something was keeping him down. “First period was a disaster. I couldn’t even doze off once. Every time I feel myself close to resting, that teacher would just glare at me like she’s gonna rip my head off or something. It was not scary, just really disturbing. One of these days people are going to realize the uselessness of mathematics; then they’ll understand. But I have to take this until then.”
“What are you talking about? How could people ever think that math is useless?” Shiroi didn’t seem to be on the same page. Of course, being as oblivious as he was; he didn’t recognize Akari’s obvious irony saying what he did.
“Get a joke dude…” Taiyo, on the other hand, hit it right on the mark. He knew better than to take any of Akari’s depressing whines seriously.
As they were approaching the school’s cafeteria, he pulled out a wad of cash and gave it to Shiroi. Shiroi knew what to do. They’ve been doing this for what seemed to be months now. Accustomed enough, as Shiroi ran into the cafeteria, Akari rested his back on the nearby wall. And to no one’s surprise, he sighed again. As strange as this action was being repeated time and time again, he didn’t do it to get attention. He just felt like sighing most of the time.
“Why do YOU look so down?” Taiyo questioned him, although what Akari hated the most at the moment was to be ironically interrogated like this.
“I just have a lot on my mind. Things are really picking up on the school and stuff you know. Basically my multitasking ain’t really working well or anything. Also there’s the problem with my recent breakup so… I’m restless right now.” Akari did look as tired as he had said. Though being used to sleeping for 4 hours a day, he just did a 7 and a half run the previous night, meaning right now he’s much sleepier and having a lot of work stuffed up. He wasn’t extremely tired, just extremely disappointed on how tired he was yesterday.
“Well I’ve been doing the same thing for days.” Hiraki said it. In fact, he had to say it. He was being really frustrated at the time, playing Pers*na 3 FES on his Playstati*n emulator without an ending in sight, though no one knew him could blame him. His computer was never made for doing something like that. Occasionally there’s also the “blue screen of death”.
“Yoh boys, I’m back!” Shiroi had returned with 2 bottles of C*ke and 4 plastic cups. Most people couldn’t come to imagine how he could have held that much items. When they saw him holding twice as much, Shiroi basically became the handiest guy in class. Handy at carrying that is. Each on of them took a cup and poured the drinks respectively to their share. “So what have you guys been on about?”
“The usual stuff, my depression, Taiyo’s fetish, Hiraki’s games... I also see you’ve not yet gotten over your sudden love for the color pink.” Akari said that out of nowhere, but anyone else would think he said that just to tease Shiroi.
“Hey, my love for all those that are pink and oval does not come and go just like THAT. It’s a profound and mature deduction I made for myself, which was already 3 months ago. If I were to gotten over it then it would have been over right about now don’t you think?” Shiroi was trying hard to deny others’ view on his way of life. Though loving the color pink might be strange to certain people, the other three were no stranger to what Shiroi could be like. However, none of them were in any position to speak ill of his’ “fetish” since each one of them had gotten one, each more distinct than the last. Despite that, the catchy phrase “fetish four” had never crossed their minds.
“I think we should get back… it’s almost time for home room to start again.” Hiraki suggested. Taiyo lifted his shoulders, just like that, and finished his drink; afterwards he went upstairs immediately. Akari followed but with the drink still being slowly gulped down his throat. It was his style; he didn’t like to rush things but to enjoy it slowly and calmly. Hiraki was not concerned about the drink at all, only to his music. Shiroi put away the emptied bottles and followed them as they headed upstairs, with no abnormal sightings which Akari thought of at all.
2nd period started. Dozing off, Akari could faintly hear the sound of fire trucks running nearby, though he did not care. The sound got clearer, as there were more and more car being packed up on the nearby streets, running at top speed. Now he had to care. Listening closely to what was happening outside, Akari could hear a faint radio announcement, but the class was too noisy for him to hear much of anything. His seat was on the 2nd desk counting from the closest to the board. Behind him were Nankyokuen, then Taiyo, then Hiraki. Shiroi was all the way in the other side of the classroom.
“For those who don’t know, today is the gathering of student’s parents from all over the city. They have chosen our school to be the place to uphold the event. Now as proud as I’m supposed to feel, I think you’d agree with me that this whole thing is just a pain in the neck.” The teacher said. He was the one always honest with the students, though sometimes they couldn’t tell whether his honesty was out of good will or stupidity.
Back at the class, about five people were actually paying attention, the rest were chatting, dozing off or just using their cell phones. None of which did the teacher cared anyways. His job was just to be patient enough to not rip the heads off those brats, stand and talk something out of a guideline book for 45 minutes. The thing was that he had this book as a “secret teaching tool” of which he actually remembered by heart then coming to school, saying “textbooks are for nerds” and proceed to teach the class with what he’d memorized. Truly, no one actually bothered to check his sayings, but it really didn’t matter to the students.
Strange enough, today, the class noticed him acting different. He had a physical condition, having to replenish his water supply constantly. However, he nearly didn’t leave his bottle the whole lesson, just trying to hang on to it. The reason would be shear stress. Since the local teaching competition was just around the corner, he had to do everything right. Meaning he must perfect his skills; and the class was the perfect guinea pig for the job.
Hour III
- Spoiler:
- The ten minutes break had once again started, early this time however. The teacher received a phone call, saying it was urgent, and then left ten minutes before. He did look quite hasty, but it was not like any of the students actually noticed him leaving. That made a total of 20 minutes break, which in most cases could be a miracle for the students. Now, it was not that much, for some of them at least.
Taiyo approached Akari, who had been standing over the windows ever since he woke up. Before he did, Nan apparently has left for some reasons. Taiyo apparently exhausted his game console’s battery, and had to result to talking to pass the time.
“You look even more depressed today, what seems to be the matter?” Taiyo had to ask something or this would be another stare – stare conversation.
“Honestly speaking, I don’t understand myself, but something about this just doesn’t seem right.” Akari didn’t look at today as a good day, not at all. Normally a teaching leaving early would have just excited the sleepiness out of him, but not today.
“Like what?” Hiraki went near as well, overhearing the last part of the sentence. He however, would be one who never exhausts his phone.
“Yoh, why are you guys all gathered up here?” And then Shiroi came. As strange as a 4 guys team thing goes, the four hardly ever cares whether or not the others butt in, it has just become natural. They would usually gather with similar methods. Though the distinction was strong, they did make a pretty good group.
Akari didn’t pay much attention to any of the question though. He simply had his eyes adverting around, looking for something to ease off his bad feeling. He did see something.
Futaka Taisen, a girl who was sat above him, just had one leg out of the classroom. She had another girl with her, seemingly trying to convince her to go together, though apparently it didn’t work. Futaka sighed and left directly to the other end of the hallway, where another staircase was located. The other girl simply didn’t get what she was talking about, and decided to just go back into the classroom and settled down.
It all happened so quickly.
He should’ve realized something was really wrong.
“Dude, are you even listening to us? It’s not polite to doze off while talking, you know!” Taiyo shook Akari’s head. Despite saying this, they knew Akari hadn’t even spoken anything yet.
“Sorry… wasn’t paying much attention.”
“Hey… look at that. The streets are so crowded, and it’s 10 in the morning, I wonder why.” Hiraki pointed outside. From this window, they could clearly see what was going on in front of the school’s metal gate. Usually this street, at this hour, in this weather would never be this crowded.
They saw police cars.
They saw ambulances.
They saw fire trucks.
They saw people driving in fear.
They saw an accident, happening right in front of the gate.
Immediately, the drum sounded. Usually it would be 3 separate parts, signaling the students and teacher to get ready for next period.
This time, it was one and a half.
Akari kept staring at the accident site. Technically speaking, it was a car that drove itself into a nearby tree, crashing its head. Normally, people would survive that with some minor injuries. He and the others thought so too. However, no matter how long they waited, no one ever came out of that car.
A female teacher rushed suddenly into the classroom. She looked distressed and shook up, not knowing what to believe or what to feel. All she could do was to carry out orders others had given her.
“Everyone evacuate! This is not a drill! Evacuate from the building immediately!” She screamed immaturely.
The previous accident hit a nerve. It was quite a loud one.
The next was even louder.
An explosion from a fire truck, which crashed right at the school gate, burst it open and threw it inside, away from view.
All around school, screams simultaneously filled the air.
It happened way too fast for them to realize what the matter was.
The said teacher suddenly collapsed down in agony. Some female students in the class screamed. Some male didn’t know what was going on, stood silence and watched as their teacher slowly but surely got back on her feet.
Literally
Her feet were the only thing holding her up. Her left arm had dissolved into a mix of fiery liquid. It was a sight to last forever in the memories of many. A student came, tried to help her up right. As naturally as it went, she bit him in the arm. He screamed. He rolled down in pain, just like she did. Then he stood up, just like she did. Drool came out of his mouth and onto the floor, as his eyes rolled up their own sockets. It happened through out the course of a single agonizing minute. Then the entire class screamed. And the next class, and the next class, until the entire school was covered in scream and shout.
A perfect harmony of chaos
Surrounding the A building classrooms, were two separate hallways, both accessible through the classes and both joint in an area that connected them to the stairways. Students burst out of their classes, this time in fear. They were aiming for the shortest road downstairs, and out. They stepped on each other, trying to escape. The ruthlessness of the scene depicted the truth of human nature: savage and instinctive. The teacher and the bitten student were around, heading towards the running crowd and trying to bite whoever they could find. As painful as it went, those who were bitten became another one of “them”. The students were bitten, scared, beaten, stepped on, disgusted and scarred. Akari, Shiroi, Taiyo and Hiraki stood perfectly still on the verge of the window, inside the hallway furthest from their class to the stairways.
The Apocalypse
They were alone after a minute.
More explosions sounded, but this time, in chains.
A series of cars crashed through the crushed gate and into the school.
The screams were still filling the air, now of pain rather than fear.
Five more minutes passed.
The school was now filled with deep but extremely outnumbering roaring sounds.
The sound of the damned
Their teacher had just come back from the stairways area. She was covered in blood, both arms dissolved and a leg spun backwards. She roamed around the class, seemingly looking for anything organic. There were a few bodies of those who weren’t fast enough, being struck down and killed as the escaping crowd spun wild. She approached a familiar girl, and started to chuck down on her. The meat being chewed loudly and brutally masticated really was not a sight people would need to see. Finally, she blindly found her way, slowly moving towards Akari and the other three, seemingly unsatisfied with her previous meal.
They were standing in shock, perfectly still and silent. They somehow knew what was that they needed to do in this situation, how they needed to act was all in their minds. However, blood pressure and survival instincts could not lead them to do what they knew should have been done.
This was all so familiar to them, yet too vague to be pointed out.
The teacher, with drooling and blood-filled mouth approached them. They felt like they should make a joke, but clearly was unable to.
Then they heard noises, shoe noises.
The teacher threw herself at them, opening rip cage, ready to bite their faces off, literally.
*Bang*
She collapsed down with a bullet stuck through her head, gave a light jerk then stopped moving. They could distinctively see the rotting puddle of flesh squirming under their feet. However, that was not even their concern at the moment.
Akari turned to his right, towards the furthest of stairs, to see Futaka with a gun in hand and tears flowing down her eyes. Usually, she would look like somewhat of a mysterious girl, with her hair covering her forehead and a “yes” smile always present. Right now, she looked shocked, confused and extremely focused. She slowly watched the guys’ movement, until she was perfectly sure none of the four had been bitten. She then slowly and silently walked to them. As cautiousness went in a situation like this, one could never be too careful.
“I see… you three are still fine. As fine as anyone could be in this situation anyways.” Her words were heavy, and they all knew why. Facing something like this wasn’t exactly something you’d be taught to do. Being able to retaliate to the external effects put her above them in terms of decisiveness. “How were you able to survive the onslaught up until now?” Her question was perfectly unreasonable. None of them could have thought of a satisfying answer that could’ve been enough for this genius girl.
“We didn’t move.” Finally, Akari spoke, trying to keep it down like she did. It was simple and to the point. She didn’t quite believe it at first, but the lack of blood and sign of struggles around the nearby area made it clear to her in an instant.
“I see… they react to movement, somehow…” Futaka was standing right there, speaking, living, firm and strong. The four guys were also standing right there, silent, living, shook and weak. One could find more than enough words of mockery to describe the scene, but none of them had their minds on such trivial matters. “How did you know it would work, or did you just… do nothing?”
“This kind of stuff happens all the time in mangas, you know.” Hiraki said that, trying to pick up his own spirit, trying to derive this into a manga he read, titled Highsch**l *f the Dead. However, his mental capabilities could never have taken it into something as real as this. As far as zombies taken over the world went, there was surely enough reference to teach them.
They stood silent for another minute, to make sure that no one uninvited was going to come to this floor. Each of them could feel the sweat slowly dripping above their skin, to the point that they were worried they would die if they had brushed it off.
“What is going on Futaka?” Shiroi broke the silent with his light slow voice. Automatically assumed, since Futaka was usually one to count on in tough cases, the questions were on her. “What is this… blood bath? This is a joke right? It has to be! I mean look at all this… just like a costume party. Halloween…” As he was saying that, his knees shook like crazy. No matter how he tried to believe it wasn’t true; he could not help his own intelligence. Every little nerve told him this was happening. He knew it was.
“This is happening, almost… no, exactly as a zombie Japanese anime.” Futaka couldn’t help but admit it. She had seen Highsch**l *f the Dead also. She knew how this was going to go if it were the same. However, as a woman of knowledge, she could never bring herself to TRUST something like that. “And the faster you are going to accept that fact, the better and more prepared you are going to be when you are forced to face the truth.”
“Are you saying… we are facing a zombie attack… disease… pandemic or something?” Taiyo has also been shaken to his knees, like the rest. Normally an Otaku like him would just laugh this off as a “real world thing”. However, now that it had come to his life, he could never block that information out. Frankly speaking, the fact that all of them had watched that same anime was the reason why they were all alive.
We knew.
“It seems so.” Futaka gave a slight breath and answered. No matter what she might have been, right now, with a calm attitude in this situation and a gun in her hand, she was the most reliable one here. “Obviously the root of the problem has yet to be exposed. I’m not really curious about that right now either.”
“Where did that gun come from anyways? And why are you still so calm like this?” Akari seemed that this quiet time was the time for seeking answers, since he already accepted this situation as a fact that cannot be denied. Having drowned in possibilities, it would be thoughtless to say he had never thought of a doomsday scenario like this before. It was just easier for him to change and fit to the situation than for most people. However, a little voice in his head never seized to laugh at his own ignorance.
“This gun is an old model pistol, from the war if I’m not mistaken. I was hiding in the cafeteria when this madness broke out. I stayed hidden, until everyone had run off screaming and diverting all the attention from me; I took this gun from the drawer and got up here where it’s supposedly safe.” She spoke briefly. The guys were completely amazed of how she would be able to handle herself in such a situation. She noticed, but didn’t give the slightest remark. She took a quick look inside the class. Near her seat, lying on the ground was the dead body of a girl, the same girl she tried to take with her. Futaka’s tears started flowing once more. “Oh Saru... Why wouldn’t you just listen?” No matter how much she didn’t want to remember, that girl was such an important person. She had thought of this, that her failure in trying to convince Saru to hide with her was the most regrettable thing she had ever done.
Death
The moment went and passed, as Futaka regained her composure and wiped her eyes. She knew she could not take her time to drown in the hopeless past. If she didn’t know what to do back then, she might have already been a part of that past.
“Wait a second; you KNEW this was going to happen so you HID in the cafeteria?” Just realizing this part now, Hiraki decided to ask her one last thing, just for the heck of timing.
“I was worried, and woman’s intuition told me that something wrong was going on. All the cars, all the crashing, all the sudden calls, everything somehow made me think of this possibility.” Futaka once again impressed them. Not only did she thought through an efficient way to avoid “them”, she was also able to save 4 more survivors that might have been killed otherwise. However, Akari himself could not help but think that this whole ordeal had come as something very convenient.
Somebody knew.
“Argh, Help me!” The sudden loud scream gained their attention. They saw a male student running, blood stained all over up to the 3rd floor, meaning the same floor of which they were standing. He was panicking. Almost immediately, they sensed sounds of movement from all over the school, aiming for this very floor. The wounded student ran to them. His arm was black, and he was sweating all over.
He was bitten.
Futaka might have not noticed since she was leaning on the opposite walls, but Taiyo had definitely seen the blackened arm before. He grabbed the firearm before she could protest, and fired a direct shot at the male student’s head.
He fell down, died, permanently.
Shiroi and Hiraki looked at him, impressed and scared at the same time. Akari felt his hand tingling; however, he would rather not talk about it. His knuckles tightened, as he caught back his breath.
That was too close.
The deep roaring sounds were getting closer and closer, as if they were striking right into their beating hearts. Everyone could feel their brains tightening up, fixated to the pressure.
“This place is no longer safe; you need to get out of here!” Futaka quickly said. Right now, every single one of her words was an absolute order. “Your best chance of surviving would be to find yourself a way to escape and supervise the situation without being sensed.”
“Us, what are you planning on doing?”
“I’m going to use this gun to break through to the lower floors. It should be easy enough to do if it were just me.” Futaka explained her plan, but it was not really what the guys wanted to hear. You could say it’s a solo one, meaning they would be left behind. “However, more than one person coming down at the same time would be suicidal, since they would just slow each other down. Also, only the gun carrier would be able to break through safely enough not to be bitten. Anyone of us would be able to; however, since none of you have any previous experience with real firearms nor do you have the intelligence to effectively use it, giving this to me would be the best option. I will come downstairs and try to find any other survivors. This place is packed with cars today it should provide me with enough space to utilize my living advantage.” No matter how she put it, Futaka was discouraging and insulting them at the same time. No one could blame her. Who could ever think these failing jousters who couldn’t do squad in class would be able to help? She’d rather escape on her own.
That’s where you’re wrong.
Akari smirked. His mind had been set. In no way did he intend to follow this so-called plan of hers.
“Why don’t we find a way to exchange the gun once you’re downstairs? We have a rope right here in the class; you can give us the gun so each of us would be able to break out one by one.” Shiroi just said something that immediately passed through his head that he thought would be the best chance for all of the to get out of here, according to Futaka’s theory.
“I’m afraid that only sounds good on paper Shiroi.” Futaka had to explain one more time, but all of them already felt the clock ticking. The noises were getting closer, and if they didn’t make it in time, they’re dead. “As I try to break down; I would obviously need to use the gun to kill off some pathing blockers. Sound and movement would just lure more of those things to us, to a point when we can no longer break through. Thus, I suggest we move fast. The four of you should take this time we still have of the element of surprise to ready yourself. Best chance would be to find a good hiding spot until things cool down a bit. Now, I bid you good luck and farewell.”
Futaka did a military “goodbye” sign, and so did Akari. The rest preferred not to, as they feel their positions were unjustified. She ran towards the far end of the hallway towards the stairs. None of the damned had yet to come close, since they appear to be slow once they were completely transformed. Taking a deep breath, she rushed downstairs.
“This… is real…” Shiroi could not take it all in just yet.
“And I just killed a person.” Taiyo stared at his hand. He felt unusually unexcited. So robotic, one could say.
“Guys, focus! Like Futaka said, we need a good hiding place. And it has to be on this floor, since we won’t be able to get down any time soon.” Hiraki shook them up, trying to make them more mature for the most important moment.
“Maybe hide under the desks quietly and wait until they go away?” Shiroi suggested, once again immediately from his thoughts.
“I’m afraid that wouldn’t be practical. Despite them being slow, they outnumber us more than 200 to 1. The chances of them not finding us are less than 0.4%, and I suggest we not take that.” Akari analyzed the situation and gave a deduction. At this rate, our only option is to use the outer window balconies.”
Ventus Capital High School was a building designed with Western Style German architecture features. Out of all the windows from the furthest hallways in the A building, about 5 of them has outer window balcony. Basically it was just a fancy name for some hardened cement sticking out under the windows. However, it is big enough to carry a person. And today, it might as well just be a savior.
They climbed out the outer window. Thankfully it was just big enough for them to sit down, using the walls to take cover. Futaka’s escape attempt had created a good diversion, now their job is to wait things out a bit. However, from the outer window, they could now see everything happening in the school’s front yard.
The front yard was not the place to park the cars; the back yard was. However, right now, about 6 cars have been broken down on it. The scene was horrifying to say the least, but it was nothing but a mere example of what’s still to come.
The streets outside had become a place of total chaos and destruction. As they expected: the disease or whatever it was had spread so fast and so efficiently that as they speak, the main road had been crawling with them.
“So… this is… it?” Hiraki stared outside, not even blinking. Despite still having his headphones on, there was no reason for him to keep in operating anymore. “Could this be the end of the world?”
“The very concept of the apocalypse is flawed Hiraki, but I won’t deny we might not be able to make it.” Akari said. None of them had ever had any experience with this, since they were never prepared for something so bizarre. If this were the end of the world for them, then it would be one of the most disappointing ends they could’ve encountered.
Taiyo gave a “shush” sign, as the moaning sound of the damned closely approached. The four of them had to keep quiet, or who knows what else would happen. From afar, they heard gunshots. They knew what they had to do beforehand.
“We need a plan.” Akari whispered. “And we need a good one, not just sitting here waiting for Futaka. We can’t rely on her like this. If we don’t act then we’re a burden.”
Hour IV
- Spoiler:
- After a long and excruciating wait, it seemed that the damned had finally cleared out. They were heading downstairs towards the outside, where some large car crashes drew them in. However, from the outside, some of “them” are drawing inside the school instead.
“What is the plan now, boys?” Shiroi asked. No matter how much he tried, his voice was trembling with fear. They all knew that if they were to stay hidden here, eventually they would die. Putting trust on Futaka is not an option, since even if she was a genius girl who knew how to shoot; it wouldn’t be enough for this. “Please tell me you’ve already thought of something.”
“I have a plan, though it is still just a plan with a long shot, it is worth saying.” Akari said. Despite the four often hanging out together, it never occurred to them who would be the leader. Right now, that might be the most important thing yet. Seemingly it had become Akari automatically. “Whatever this phenomenon is, there would be no chance for us to survive if we were to stay here. We need to get ourselves out of the school, and use that!” He pointed at the fire truck stopped dead tracks on the side walk. The others took a look at it, and were clearly not convinced. They could clearly see some of “them” roaming even inside that fire truck. However, the sway sunk as Akari’s determined words convinced their beliefs. “As a tank to block ourselves towards somewhere of which we know that is safe.”
“Wait, if the fire truck crashed, meaning that their escape attempts were futile, and there are those “things” inside?” Taiyo for one was not about to let his concern go. Well how could he be? It did just sound like something from a video game.
“Because when the trucks got here in the first place, the streets were still crowded with people, living people. The chaos would obviously block the way. Also the nature of the humans in these modern days is to hang on to their vehicles, which were the most natural explanation of road accidents. However, now that most of them are dead, I have a feeling the road blocks would also be cleared for now, until someone decides to rescue whoever’s left alive.” Akari slowly stood up and tried to see what was going on inside the hallway from the outside window. A few of “them” still lingered around, but relatively far away that they couldn’t hear them. Rest assured, he continue with the plan. “You see that police car right? It has crashed into our building, meaning that in itself would be a roadblock. We can’t secure the building on our own, without weapons anyways. We will search the car for guns and ammos, anything actually just to be prepared. Then we can proceed to find Futaka and the rest of the survivors, since I doubt the four of us can break through that gate by ourselves. All we need now is to make things just a little bit easier for everyone; and that is finding a diversion to keep them away from the police care long enough so we can search it. And looking at that car, it might very well be our next hiding place, as long as we can set up a proper blockade.”
“Alright, that plan sounds reasonable enough. Also, I have an idea for a diversion.” Hiraki pulled out his sound amplifier. Not aware of what he was doing, Shiroi almost stopped him. However, the determined look on Hiraki’s face made them trust him. He plugged in the sound amplifier, connected it to his phone, set the music timer. Slowly, he stacked the book in his bag around in a circular fashion, and then put the phone alone with the amplifier in. Nodded, Akari held out 3 fingers and started pulling them back in, one by one.
Three…
Two…
One…
An eerie loud sound emerged from the school’s front yard, where a *hitch* sound had appeared almost right before it. It attracted the nearby dead bodies to it, and some of the ones at school as well. Akari felt a bit relieved, this was their only time window to act! Failure is NOT and option.
The four jumped inwards, ran directly towards their classrooms. The nearby corpses noticed and started to approach them. Taiyo grabbed the broken table bottom, which was present at some of the really old ones. Shiroi stomped a chair in half, both of which he and Hiraki took. Akari took his whole bag with him, along with a friend’s guitar nearby. He suddenly looked at the corpse of the girl that Futaka tried to save earlier, still lying on the floor.
Wait…
However, this was no time to think, only to act. As one of “them” came closer, he slammed the guitar, still inside its casing, into the thing’s head. It flew right off. It fell down and died. He regained his balance from the swing, holding firm to that weapon.
I just killed someone.
This is…
“Akari, Hands up on the right!” Shiroi surged near and swung his piece of wood into one of “them” that got too close. If it weren’t for his quick reaction, none of them would be safe about now. “What’re you doing man? At least focus at a time like this!”
“Sorry.” Akari snapped out of his dangerous wander. His inner voice did distract him at one of the most crucial moments. However, this was not too late. “We need to make a blocking on the first floor. Now would be the time to go!”
Avoiding the rest of “them” on the 3rd floor, they made a run for it, towards the stairways. As they expected, a pack of “them” were waiting for them their, upstairs and downstairs. Despite supposed to be used to it by now, they could not help but feeling vomit up their throat when the sight hit them. Dozens dead corpses were lying around; eyes being above their own sockets. These were probably the ones who were bitten too hard, ripped a part too much to be able to regenerate. Next to them were “them”; standing and moaning their mouths off, aimlessly wandering around, trying to reach for a good grasp. Blood were dripping everyone, inside their mouths and under their feet, all over the walls and all over the four survivors themselves. Akari and the others observed the situation from the distance. Deciding it was the time for action; he took out his phone and typed, in order to avoid drawing unnecessary attention. It said:
“They are currently passive and slow; don’t know what trigger the rage. Sound attracts, trying smell.”
Then, a faint aroma filled the air. It was not heavily affecting the hallway, but was distinct enough that they could tell it’s location from a distance. However, none of “them” seemed to be attracted to the smell at all. It came from a bottle of perfume in Akari’s bag, which he swiped from the table of a female classmate. Testing it like this would be extremely dangerous, since there was no telling what would happen if smell actually attracted them. Despite that, Akari trusted his guts more than trivial reasoning.
“I see. Alright, on my mark,” The lit words on his phone were typed back in and taken away. He was ready.
Akari stretched out three fingers, two, and one. After it reached zero, the four of them carefully dashed towards the stair. Hiraki threw a small tile of wrapping nylon towards the other end of the stairways. They burst like shrapnel. Then there were more of “them” approaching the wrapper. It burst even more, attracting a good number of “them” around. There were about ten left. The wooden weapons made short work of them, due to their low reaction speed and the fact that they weren’t trying to eliminate, only breaking through. One could say it was somehow a little bit too easy for comfort.
They approached the 2nd floor. As planned, the damned on this floor were already approaching the sounding target above them. Taiyo placed his wooden board in front horizontally and pushed down, knocked down a whole lot of “them” trying to come up the stairs. Securing the stairs was the next step, and completed. The board was also broken to only a pipe-sized unit due to the sheer force it had to withstand.
Akari smashed the guitar, still inside the carrier, into one of “them”, creating a loud echo noise attracting other moving bodies. Knowing exactly what to do, he grabbed the falling dead’s neck and swung him as loud as he could, as far as he could away from the stairs. As planned, Taiyo threw at it a special alarm clock which was set to ring in exactly 10 seconds. As the dead body fell on the floor, the alarm went off, triggering the aggressiveness of the damned onto one of their own, while at the same time the four men pack escaped towards the lower floor. Glaring backwards, Akari could see “them” eating their own members, just for the heck of eating. However, that proves that the “meat wall” would be effective.
Being between the 2nd and 1st floor, Akari and the others knew they had no chance of turning back at this point. Observing from a distance of ten feet, they could see the front entrance to the building has been blocked by the smashed car. It was unknown whether someone was inside the car; but they had no other choice but to risk it. Moving as silently as possible, Hiraki held a 5-inches blade inside his multi-tool by hand and slowly approached the police car’s smashed open door. He quickly saw inside were a dead body and one of “them”, lifelessly drooling its blood out. It seemed to have its leg dissolved, which was why it couldn’t move. Quick and decisive, Hiraki stabbed the knife into its head, utterly killing it without making much of a fuss and a simple bleeding wound. Shiroi received his signal and moved in, gently cut off the few threads still connecting the car’s seat to the frame. He and Taiyo put up a blockade in the small corner of the building with debris lying around the crash site. While “them” on this floor were still confused due to the alarm clock and was eating each other, Hiraki quickly moved the bodies inside the car away and on to the back of the car, as a special “meat wall” that they discussed. This meant that should some of “them” got over the car without being noticed, they would simply eat the dead bodies first, giving the guys plenty of time to react.
Watching from the top of the stairs, Akari could see his plan going perfectly. In fact, it was executed so flawless that it actually gave him the feeling of something bad was going to happen in return. However, it was not his current concern. He helped put up a tile of tempered glass from the car’s windows and used it as a sound resistance, blocking their sounds of movement from the upper floors. They did all this while several of “them” were strolling about, not knowing what to pick up or seek for. 10 minutes of heart-fell work later, the blockade was finished, and the four of them retreated to the inside of the car to hide from “their” sight, just to make sure. Afraid of being heard, Shiroi pulled out his mobile phone and typed in what he wanted to say. The others also did the same.
“Alright, the blockade’s up. What do we do now?” He nervously looked around as he typed.
“Supposedly, Futaka has left to find other survivors. We haven’t heard gun shots in a while, so there are two possibilities. One, Futaka has found a survivor(s) or still looking for one while staying safe and out of sight. Two, she already died. Knowing her, I’d say she would be too smart for those “things” to get the better of her. However, we must be prepared for the worst.” Akari slowly responded, looking just as worried. If someone were to say he was worried about Futaka, it would have been slightly truth. However, in his head right now were visions of the terrifying future, and the dangerous scale of the spreading. “If Futaka is going to come back with help, I think with enough weapons we should be able to at least escape to the streets with some kind of vehicle. We should be able to pull our plans together from there. In the case she wouldn’t, we must execute plan B.”
“And this plan B would mean?”
“Plan B involves us going to find specific materials around school, of which would be used to make a firecracker. Hiraki knows how to put one together, that part should be fine. Once we’ve managed to gather the needed components, we would be able to make a big enough explosion as a diversion to escape. However, I’d rather not execute this plan, since nothing assures us of being successful, at all.”
“Then how do we know when we have to get to plan B?” Shiroi questioned again. Despite them having to put complete trust into Akari’s judgment, they could not help but feel a little scared. Everything he said had worked perfectly before, but keep risking their lives was not something the others wanted to hear. Instead, simple and misleading thoughts might come off.
“Simple. We wait.” Akari suddenly had this care-free look on his face.
“What?”
“I said we wait, for half an hour or so. If Futaka had found someone, or was still alive for that matter; then something should have happened by then. We should easily spot it.” Akari stretched his hand a bit. Typing in the phone like this is tiresome work. “Until then, I suggest we stay put and in the mean time, trying to study as much of “their” characteristics as possible.” Smiling calmly for once in days, Akari turned his head towards the damned and typed his final words before it fell to silent. “You know what they say, we must know our enemies.”
Having quiet the others, Akari had some time to think. He knew what the damned were like already. However, the mere scale of this phenomenon was what he was interested in the most. Who could ever realize the grasp for hope was a mere equation away.
What if it was happening around the world? What would he think then?

Re: Horror of Ventus Damned
Hour V
- Spoiler:
- The sun had reached the top of the sky. Too many things had happened today to divert people’s attention to the sun though. However, not to many of them notice that after 12 hours into the day, the sun was still constantly changing. It has already become a fact too clear to be ignored.
Ventus Capitol was in total chaos at first, but started to quiet down really fast afterwards, as if time itself had already stopped. Those who didn’t make it simply didn’t make it. Those who did are trying to keep it down, stacking themselves up in tall buildings and were waiting for help.
Hanayome gazed at the beautiful sunny day as if she hadn’t a care in the world. The marvelous Akaitana blade was snuck to her waist, pointing down to the ground. Under her feet, lied several of “them”, cut into pieces.
Two inches behind her was a loaded gun, pointed directly at her neck, aiming for vital spots.
“How long do you plan to stay like this?” Hanayome spoke with her unshaken voice. She could care less what was going to happen. She had really lost the meaning of life.
“I need you to explain what exactly is going on at the moment, or else I’m sorry I won’t be able to let you go.”
“Then this should be a short talk.” She smirked.
In no less than a few seconds, they noticed running sounds heading up to where they were. Both of them knew it was “them”. However, how “they” were able to make it up here has yet to be answered.
A split second later, a girl ran up to where they were. She was wearing a dark uniform with white skirt and a pistol in her hand. She looked distressed, due to being chased by “them”.
“It seems I have to let you go. Other priorities come first.”
The gun was lifted off of Hanayome’s head and on to firing rapidly at “them” running up the stairs, covering for the weakened girl. Hanayome turned back with an expressionless face and climbed out of the window. Then she dropped herself down towards the ground…
*Thud* *Crack* *Bang*
“Did you guys hear that?” Shiroi whispered. It’s been more than a half hour ever since the blockade was put up. Surely he had regained some confidence in the situation. “It sounds like something happened in the other end of the school’s backyard.”
“I heard it, but couldn’t really guess what someone would be doing on the yard filled with “them” at this hour.” Akari noticed as well, but he had his doubts it was a living person. “Maybe it’s “them” just eating some survivors and throwing the bodies out the windows.”
Having said that, he could not help but heard the distinct gun shots from the B building. It was loud enough to agro those bodies in their floor to come to the site. There were two routes from the A building to the B building, and unfortunately one of them was where their parameter was set up. Of course they noticed this, but moving right now would be a dead give away. The reason their blockade was set up was to prevent exactly this, but supposed it failed.
Fortunately, they were able to run some tests during the time the school was idle. They now knew a little bit more about “them” than before. They knew “they” could be easily provoked, “They” always rot, and having to eat organic matters to stay alive, even if it meant one of their own. Also it seemed “they” have no other sense other than primitive direction deduction ability. However, “they” were vicious; “they” kill, eat and even move like zombies in the movies. Despite that, Akari was still trying to point out that “they” weren’t really zombies, at least not in definition. “They” were people, seemingly to have caught a contagious disease that had somehow spread through the entire city. It seemed who ever came in contact with “their” blood or saliva will caught the disease as well. In any case, it’s like rabid, but a much more powerful one.
All those information passed through Akari’s mind once more in a flash. Suddenly, the possibility of full recover existed in his thoughts. He realized something that he had been missing out all these times.
Animals
At this part of the school, only humans would live. However, at the furthest of all, inside the school’s library, was where they kept the animals. If humans caught this disease, would the animals do too?
I need to know.
Some of “them” had already noticed the blockade, and trying to pass through it. Though “they” couldn’t with such a few numbers, the noises “they” made were catastrophic to the guys inside the parameter. More of “them” were already approaching the blockade also. Sooner or later they’d be able to break through. Also, considering how close this part was to the main opened gate, it would not be wise to stay here any longer. They had already packed up the supplies, guns and ammos they found in the car. Though Akari would just prefer the guitar as a close-range weapon; he still decided to keep it on his back, giving his own back for Hiraki to carry and used a sniper rifle inside the car. Taiyo was handed a shotgun and the other two got pistols. The ammo however, was very limited. The pistols got about 50 spare rounds. However the shotgun barely had 20 and the rifle had only 7.
“We need to go. They’re going to surround us if we don’t move.”
Akari pulled himself out of the car, with the other 3 closely following behind. To make it clear, they are right now at an intersection. The car they were in crashed through the closest entrance of the building to the gate. There were 3 more entrances. 1 was the closest to the school’s yard. The other 2 were further, 1 of which was crawling with “them” and another one was on the other side of the hallway. Thus, there only choice was to flee to the front yard, where there were dozens of cars parked. There were obviously a lot of “them” there, but due to their nature of inability to sense, the guys should be able to escape on the roofs of the cars. However, where they could go was not yet determined. It was all left to improvise.
The 4 passed through the entrance onto the parking yard. The number of “them” there was enormous, about a few hundreds at least. They quickly climbed on to the vehicle’s tops and kept on running. They were of course noticed by “them”, which was close by and “they” started to give chase.
The guys needed to seek a temporary shelter, possibly one that they were sure hadn’t been overrun. Skipping on top of the car tops, Akari heard noises, very loud noises, of gun shots from the top floor of the B building.
This school was somewhat strangely made. From the main gate, to the right is the front yard and to the left was the smaller D building which held the teacher’s lounge. Further to the right was the A classroom building. Between them was a clear path towards the large back yard. The school had 3 parking spots, one was left to the path, one was in the front yard and one was towards the further right and of the backyard, seeing from the A building. The B and C classroom buildings are attached, together formed a 90 degree mass of concrete, covering the further left part of the yard. From the 3rd parking spot, there was a path accessible towards the storage rooms. At the end of that path was a roughly beaten up wall that some of the students cracked a large hole in it, leading towards the outside.
Having thought of his plan, Akari now knew his rather convenient alternative, just in case the one he already thought of wouldn’t work. Hearing the gun shots on the B building reminded him of the loud *thud* he heard near it just a few moments ago.
Someone is still alive.
Even so, the risk of them being dead by the time the guys got there was very high. Akari decided to not push their luck and signaled the other 3 to follow him, towards the only fortified 1 entrance room in school.
Nurse’s office, hurry!
Suddenly, he felt a slight chill running through his veins. Every single nerve in his body told him to stop. His mind suddenly went blank, his sweats poured and his eyes went blurry.
He stopped.
A blade chopped the 2 inches of air in front of him in half, cutting the car he was on in half. A red, small figure appeared in front of him, holding that very same blade. He had to run; he wanted to run. However, his body could not be commanded to move, ever so slightly.
In front of him was a girl. Smaller than he was, she looked strange. She had red, straight hair, wearing a white T-shirt and a red skirt. Even her eyes were red, red in sorrow and pain. Just looking at that image seized Akari’s chance to flee. She swung her sword and thrust it towards him.
The blade almost went through him.
Having grasped the situation, Taiyo fired his gun to stop the girl’s aggression. However, the bullet was deflected off the top of the sword, which had pierce through the body of 4 of “them” who were trying to jump on Akari.
Right after regaining control of his body, Akari had already taken out the guitar and slammed right into the 4, releasing the girl’s sword from their bones. He stared at her, wanting to say something, but realized it was not the time for talking. The other 3 were catching up, on so were “them” in the schoolyard. Akari resumed his course towards the nurse’s office, while Shiroi, Hiraki, Taiyo and even the red girl were following him.
Fortunately, the moved fast enough to not be caught within the grip of any of “them”; surged towards the destination, Akari’s mind started to drip off into thoughts…
Futaka could feel the cold iron touching her skin, chilling her body. However, she was not in any position to complain, being carried away like this. Behind her were countless of “them” going berserk, chasing her through the hall way of the B building. She wanted to retaliate, but couldn’t. She wanted to run, but her legs couldn’t. Even if she wanted to turn back and shot, her pistol already ran out of ammo. That’s why she had everything to depend on the one carrying her away.
He took out a time bomb, slung it inside a nearby classroom. Moments later, it exploded, luring all of “them” on the floor into it. He then quickly entered the next class; inside of it were the usual, desks, chairs, a large blackboard, a few dead bodies and a glass cabinet. He opened up the cabinet and moved Futaka inside, without giving her a chance to protest. He then closed the door and signaled her not to make a sound. He then proceeded to the corner of the class and stood still.
Futaka felt herself sweating. She was now completely exposed inside the cabinet. Even though she knew this was the best solution, since “they” could not see, hear or smell, and being inside the cabinet would disable them from approaching or sensing her, but she could not shake off her fear. A small hole was screwed onto the top of every casing level, letting air flowing inside. The explosion had already passed and “they” had returned to roaming blindly around. It seemed as if his plan was to keep them safe until he could think of a safe way to get out of here. She was grateful for that, but the sight of him was just as fearful as seeing “them”.
Nankyokuen was assigned a mission upon entering the Ventus Highs a year ago, that was to closely oversee the activities of the school’s faculties. He did his job well. He had never drawn any unnecessary attention to himself, nor let his true identity be exposed. All was smooth sailing, and due to the lack of non-governmental research within the school, he truly though he could’ve just enjoyed the rest of his years at high school.
But nothing good was meant to last.
Two days back, he was reported of Shaun and Diana Kings’ death. He knew something was wrong, or was going to go wrong. He had to interrogate Hanayome, or else who knew what might happen. However, having her location blocked, he had to wait until today to make his move.
But the onslaught had already commenced. He could not do anything to stop it, and he had to let his only lead of information goes, to save a wounded classmate. Right now, he found himself sticking his back to the wall, calmly trying to find a solution. He had to reveal his true identity to Futaka and Hanayome, but under these circumstances, it was truly inevitable. He held out his arm and entered a series of codes into his system, enabling combat mode.
He knew that as an android, he could not do much else.
Futaka stared at Nan, still trying to comprehend the situation. Nankyokuen, a normal guy in her class, was really a robot, a combat robot spy for that matter. Today, a lot of bizarre things had happened. And the amount of information was so large that even a genius like her had trouble comprehending the situation. Suddenly, her train of thought was stopped with a simple *clack*. All of “them” strolling around had already passed her mind as a threat, but that was a living human’s foot step
From inside the glass cabinet, she could clearly see the shadows approaching.
Hour VI
- Spoiler:
- Akari could felt his breath faster than his mind. Locked behind the nurse’s room, he was barely able to grasp the situation. Now, abandoning their best chance of success by not going to the back parking space, now they got even more weight. Though whoever this red girl was, she was clearly not cooperative in seeking allies.
“Who are you?” He asked the girl. She looked fine for someone who had been running at 25 miles per hour. Formidable as a killer and an analyzer, he would do nothing in this closed space except for crucial information. He didn’t know why, but it seemed like this girl knew something they didn’t. “Even though she did try to slice him in half, I guess it couldn’t be helped.” He thought.
“Why should I tell you?” She turned with an arrogant attitude and left him staring in blank. Akari sighed. Even though he knew she would be hard to deal with, there was something he just never wanted to think of. This was probably one of those things.
“Wait a minute, you are Hanayome, from class 11D aren’t you?” For some reasons, both Hiraki and Taiyo recognized him. Leaving Akari in blend amazement as they approached the girl, looking excited. He could vaguely remember something about this girl who he’s probably met only once before in his life. However, it would be much more convenient if they others were to just find out for him.
“How do you know me?” Hanayome seemed to be suspicious of them, as her right hand reached for the sword next to her waist. However, the way the two acted wasn’t really a show of hostility. Instead, they looked more like a bunch of admirers.
“You were noticed in the board about 2 months ago remember? The teacher said you were a transfer student from Japan, so we were interested. When we found out, we were just awed.” Hiraki, spoken like a true fan boy, explained all he knew about this girl. Of course, that just made her feels creepy. Ventus is basically a cross-over country, with residents of Japan and some South-East Asians nations coming to a large man-made island to start anew. It’s only natural to think that those who didn’t leave the first time around would come here now. Though at the moment, that is out of the matter.
“I see.” Hanayome pondered for a moment. Akari took the time instead to observe the situation outside. They used the worst plan possible, trapping themselves inside a confined facility. Since “they” were already on their tails, they won’t be coming out of this place until they could break through.
“Hey, do you hear that?” Shiroi said, patting Akari on the back, diverting his attention to the surrounding sounds. Akari concentrates, trying to hear through all the commotion outside. Hanayome heard what Shiroi said also. She stood up straight and pulled out a sword. Looking around for a moment, she raised her hand and struck through the bathroom door. It fell down immediately, releasing a bunch of medical supplies stocked up inside. It was not surprising that there were pills and such here, but the reason they were in the bathroom instead of on the shelves is another matter. The five’s attentions were diverted onto the cracking door, not knowing something was coming in from outside.
“What are you doing here?” A woman’s voice shocked them all. Turning back, they could clearly see the school nurse locking the door after she bypassed the zombies and entered.
“Ms.Nurse, how did you get in here?” Hanayome recognized her. However, she knew that some people will be affected with this disease a little bit later than most, so she took precaution, ready to slice the white figure in half if she should ever turn crazed.
“Scent masker… I thought you girls would know of those the best.” The nurse spoke bluntly. Scent masker was a newly developed product, having the unusual ability to mask all smells and external heat detectors, until they were rubbed off. They are widely used nowadays for those girls who want to skip class trying to get past the thermal sensor at the school’s gate.
“I don’t trust those kinds of products, but it seems they work.” Hanayome lowered her stance after making perfectly sure that it was safe once again. Truly she had never thought of the abundant quantity of such supplies. However, the nurse was quite the person if she was able to think of such a measure at such a time. “Why were you gone? And why are all these medicines inside the bathroom?”
“I was going to the cafeteria to get food. With the number of these sons of bitches at the gate, even a fly would be hard to slip through. I’m just going to stay here until this is over.” The nurse spoke with great care. She actually meant: do not stay here with me until then. Obviously, it didn’t seem like she was expecting company, not that she could’ve brought enough food back with her anyways.
“We will take our leave soon enough. However, I must ask you for your support.” Akari obviously noticed her intentions. Of course, he himself had no plan to stay put here either. “We would like some of your medicines and scent masker, if you would.”
The nurse definitely noticed the weapons in their hands. She felt forced, but wisely accepted the pleading. “Very well, take whatever you want, just not the food, it’s for me.”
“Thank you.” Hiraki formally showed his gratitude while Taiyo and Shiroi packed up the supplies. Hanayome just stood there, staring outside at the horde of zombies running about. Akari realized that they had to go soon, or else the door will get too crowded to even be opened. “Is there anything else we should know about, Ms.Nurse?”
“Well yes, I guess I had to help you since I’m a nurse, I don’t like it though.” Spoken like a true health taker, the nurse gave them some of the bottles of the scent masker. “This stuff worked on those sons of bitches, but their bodies adapt to the effect after a while. I wouldn’t be surprised if they even grow immune to this thing.”
“Then you are saying we shouldn’t use this regularly?”
“I’m saying you shouldn’t use it at all, unless you absolutely had to.” The nurse clucked her tongue. Ever since she’s been back, the number of “them” had truly been increasing formidably. If she were any good nurse, or one who didn’t want to share her food, she’d pep talk her students away right now. “Well, I suggest you keep moving, or else pretty soon you won’t be able to move anymore, and we wouldn’t want that now would we?”
“Right,” Unexpected, Hanayome burst the door open and ran outside with nothing by her side except her sword. She dashed away and led “them” towards her. Having Hiraki standing in absolutely amazement, Akari knew that they cannot afford to just stand around like this anymore.
“Come on guy, we’re moving.” Akari tapped on to Hiraki’s shoulder and led the way. A few of “them” remaining started to give chase. One of them was shot in the head by Taiyo, dropping immediately. “Do not use too much ammo. Kill only those who get too close!” Akari, with no care for his possessions whatsoever, slammed the guitar at one of “them” who was trying to get close and personal.
“Where are we going this time?” Shiroi was following him right behind, trying to avoid what could be avoided. Taking a look back, the nurse’s office door had already been closed. They know that if they would want to come back there, they wouldn’t be able to.
“East wing, at the back of the parking lot,” Akari shouted that, so that his friends could here. However, predictable enough, nearby dead bodies started to react to his sound as well. “It would be the most open fortified space available in the school. Should there be a surround, we can get to high settings and hold our ground.”
“Are we leaving Hanayome behind?” Hiraki asked as he looked back to see the red shadow disappeared into the school’s backyard, running an opposite direction compared to them.
“Yes, she’d be better off without us.” Akari, feeling the pressure of his own uselessness, sprinted towards the second parking lot to the right of the infirmary. Obviously, there was a relatively high concentration of “them” there. He reluctantly took out the scent masker, spraying it over himself in a thin layer. He then threw it to Taiyo.
“What are you doing? Didn’t you hear the nurse said to only use it unless you absolutely had to?” Taiyo was being doubtful of their leader’s actions. It would only be accurate. At a time like this, the world was full of doubts.
“When would that be but now? This area is strategically important and it would be the thing that make or break my plan! If we don’t get this place under our control, all we would have left is brawl to fight.” Akari again slammed his bended guitar on to another one of “them” getting too close to Shiroi. Obviously he was panting. None of them could’ve run as fast as they could due to the extra weight and the fact that the dead bodies react to sounds. If anything, it would only be possible for them to fight for at most another half an hour should they not get any rest. “I don’t think staying to fight with these things is really the best option for us.”
Having said that, at that moment, they stayed quiet, to closely observe the situation as they had arrived successfully at the parking lot. There were more dead bodies here than others, due to the fact that most people who were trying to get their vehicles and flee were caught here. In fact, just looking at the numbers, none of them actually got free. Now, they were just strolling around, literally drooling their brains out.
“This is somewhat sad.” Shiroi commented, while they were waiting for Hiraki to finish masking his scent. “Just look at these people, what did they do to deserve such a thing?”
They deserved everything that was coming to them.
“To think humanity had fallen to such a level. In the end we are no better than animals.” Taiyo made a painful remark, as he had given up on his own kind a long time ago. He had always predicted that sooner or later all humans would just kill themselves out. “If it was just a little bit later though, more people could’ve enjoyed this scene. However, I’m sure that this is just another fail chemical experiment.”
“Right, well I’m done, ready when you are Akari.” Hiraki was done with the scent masker and put it back into his pocket. Looking at the current situation, it would be seen that it was working, since the dead bodies were avoiding them. Technically not avoiding, but rather made no remarks whether they were there or not.
“Move in!” Akari sprinted on ahead. Hearing the footsteps, nearby dead bodies started to close in. However, the maker worked well enough, seeing as how the four of them could easily maneuver through the grasps of the enemy.
“However, sighting was a problem. There was an enormous number of “them” within the area, so avoiding them old wasn’t possible. All the more, it also significantly limited their views, so much that it was hard to even see where they were going, after they’d avoided one.
Seeing as if Shiroi was trying to stay something, Akari put up his finger and shushed, reminded him of the dire situation they were in, and how worse it could get if they were to be careless. Shiroi noticed, but he couldn’t let this information go. He made a sign, pointing upwards of Akari. As Akari raised his head and look above, one of “them” fell from the sky and right at him. Almost panicked, Akari dashed backwards, right at where Taiyo was standing. The both of the fall to the ground as the fat body hit a dunk at 95 miles per hour and splatter its organs onto the ground. The sound it created was loud enough to attract other dead bodies to it, rather than to the two who fell.
Akari got back on his feet and led them through the wave of dead bodies and onto a more open area. However, this time, nothing they had thought of could’ve prepared them for what they just saw.
At the end of the lot, stood an all so familiar man, with a lashed tie and a black suit, which had been tare off…
“Fushigi…” Futaka was panting while sitting on a bench, with a girl next to her. This girl was wearing white nurse clothing, seemingly a volunteer. “That… was definitely not necessary.” It was only make it harder for her to breathe if she talked, but she had to.
“I… know…” A few feet from her was a guy, also panting with a large red stain on his stomach. However, as there weren’t even any wounds in his shirt, meaning it was not his blood, at least not the ones in the front.
“Then why… did you do that?” Once again, trying as hard as she could, Futaka tried not to choke while talking with the gulp of blood in her mouth. The other girl was attending to her wound on the side, which seemed to have stabilized over the minutes.
“I might not like you, but fighting you is not something I’d want to do.” After saying that, the guy named Fushigi reached for the shotgun a few feet away. He was wearing a suit, with a black overcoat outside. On his face was make up, covering it with a white powder, while his red eyes were glowing with the red lines.
“I’d suggest you two not talk at the moment.” Nan was there, standing outside, at the door of the room. They had just fought a tiresome battle, if not dire. Accidentally, some of “them” were fired off on the ground below, damaging some vehicles. However, he doubted anyone worth saving was below them at that point. “Futaka, your wounds are very serious, please attend to it more cautiously.”
“Right… kya!” Futaka screeched a little as the nurse girl finally finished patching her up. It hurt, but at least she lived as a human. “I’ve got to say, I like what you’ve done with your spare time Hosuka. You’ve improved a lot.”
“Thank you senpai,” Hosuka, the girl in the nurse uniform, bowed down gracefully. Despite her small figure and her clumsy attitude, she was always dependable when it comes to medication. She was an underclassman in class 10D that Futaka happened to know when they met at middle school a while back. It was staggering to see how much a weepy little girl had grown.
“And you…” Futaka managed to squeeze out the smile out of exhaustion. “It’s hard to believe you’d be able to find the nerve to blow my hips away…” She then startled back and coughed. “That sounded funny when I said it, didn’t it?”
“It was the only thing I could’ve done at that time. You were bitten, and there was not enough time.” Fushigi tried to explain himself, but he knew the best that Futaka had already understood from the start.
When Fushigi and Hosuka arrived at the third floor, sneaking around, the two crossed Nan and Futaka’s position. That caused a startle, attracting some of “them” towards their positions. Of course, to avoid startling any others, Nan and Fushigi, despite having weapons, had to result to close-range combat. Futaka got bitten at her hips during the process, and Fushigi had to use her last bullet inside the old pistol to blow the wound away, quite literally.
Nan, as an android, hadn’t the need to rest. Instead he was standing guard outside of the door. As he himself was not an organic living creature, he had no problem confronting “them”. The thing was that he needed to care for these people behind him as well. Especially that Futaka girl, since she was one of the many he was ordered to protect when they sent him to this school. Most or maybe all of others had died. That was why he had to do his best to accomplish even the smallest part of his mission. However, in the process, he had realized that this girl was no weakling either. She’s smart, active and extremely sane, even in situations like this.
Suddenly, he heard shots were being fired downwards from his position. Obviously the other three heard it too, but they were so tired they didn’t really want to move. That however, made little difference in the fact that they knew someone was alive down there, and they couldn’t do anything about it. Hosuka turned to Fushigi, as he shook his head as if saying “don’t bother”. Hosuka turned to Futaka, as she was just gasping for air, still barely conscious from the agony she just suffered…
“Sorry sensei, this ain’t nothing personal.” Akari said his final words of good bye as he stepped off the face of his homeroom teacher’s corpse. The other three had already gone ahead, reaching for a suitable position beneath the fence to make a stronghold. As Taiyo and Shiroi were transferring used desks to the front in order to create a blockade, Hiraki was shutting down the choke point as Akari entered their newly set up base.
“That was so much harder than I’ve expected it to be.” Hiraki, just sat down to rest, said with a bloody grip. He had held his weapon so hard it actually tares his palm out. They never thought they’d meet someone so familiar. Even though none of them ever really liked their homeroom teacher, the fact that whatever left of his brain was blown to pieces by them surely wasn’t something they had in mind when they enrolled into this school. “He actually looked… gross even compared to the other ugly fat… zombies that we had encountered.”
“Honestly Hiraki, you have a really good point.” Taiyo, having the one with the honor of the last hit into their teacher’s head, had also finished his job for the time being. “He seemed… different. Stronger, faster, more resilient, more skillful and more stamina, come to think of it he was a lot better than all of the other… zombies that we’ve killed so far.”
“I fear they might have already gone to a stage of evolution.” Akari tilted his head as he grabbed a chair to sit down next to the two. He was probably the one who were the least affected by the sudden change of events. “Until now, they can only replenish themselves through the means of organic nutrients of which they get from organic material. I thought they would eventually die out. However, the fact that they are currently not dead showed a problem…”
“…that they aren’t really zombies, right” Shiroi finished the sentence for him, as Akari hadn’t been able to find the right words. “Meaning we can’t just wait this out.”
“Exactly like Shiroi said. Since…“they” are not rotting of any sort, I’m afraid they are still very much alive. In short, they are humans, just like us, except with a lot less self-control.” Akari stood up a bit, to observe the situation outside of their fort. Looking around, paying close attention, he knew he had to be right. “Something must have affected their mental system. A… virus, of some sort”
“A virus you say? Now that’s just plain cliché.”
“I know, but this isn’t really like any of the zombie movies we’ve seen. And I’m not implying seeing one would have helped us either.” Akari turned around and sighed. “Our position is secured. Now if only someone will actually try to do something about this.”
Hour VII
- Spoiler:
- Roaming around the school’s yard were “them”.
Groaning around the school’s yard were “them”.
As far as the eye can see, “them” are there.
As if it’s the end of the world.
The cliché that is a zombie overrun has come to pass.
“Fushigi-sempai!” As Hosuka tried to wake him up, Fushigi already felt like going to sleep again. The nightmarish reality has already taken its toll on his mental capacity since days ago. He really didn’t want to wake up. All he wanted then, at least for a split second, was to DIE.
“I’m here.” As soon as that selfish thought passed his mind, Fushigi stood up slowly. However, it wasn’t at all the morning he had hoped for. Instead, the sky was dark of a gruesome afternoon. Rain drops filled the air as he felt Hosuka’s breathe just that close to him. “Why did you wake me? Are those things making a move against us?”
“No, thank god no. It’s just that, uhm, sempai; I just really want to talk to you alone.” Only now did Fushigi realize that Hosuka has been holding on to his hand all along. He wondered did she stay awake for all that time while he was resting. A little bit of guilt passed through his conscience, but it passed soon.
“What is it that you want to talk to me about?” Calmly and conservatively asking, Fushigi was making sure that none of them would soon be making any rash moves.
“It’s about… all of this.” Suddenly, as Hosuka’s grasp on his hand tightens, Fushigi knew exactly what intention she had in mind. However, it would be customary for him to here her out first. “Sempai, I know that… the life I’ve once lived here is no more. I am acceptance of the fact that there’s a good chance that I might not be alive walking out of all of this. However, I just want you to know, that whatever happens… I want to be by your side.”
“Hosuka-chan…” Touched, Fushigi knew what she was going through. But that was one thing that he has been hiding from her all this time. Despite the fact that they are here, together struggling through this catastrophe, secrets were still being kept between them. Right now, he thought it was time for him to at least share some of them with her. “Hosuka-chan, I… I might have not been absolutely honest with you ever since this epidemic occurred.”
“What… do you mean sempai?” Hosuka has numerous questions raised inside her head as she heard this. Possibilities running through her mind, but she decided to stay true on her feelings. Wild guesses and false accusation would not led the situation to anywhere, so hearing him out fully before making any decision was the right choice. “What have you been keeping from me?”
“Hosuka-chan, I… I know that this was going to happen.” His words shocked her to there core, and she was not the only one. As Fushigi proceeded to explain, she could tell the sense of guilt heavily lingering within his voice. “A few days ago, 3 to be exact, I found out something horrible. As you already know, my family owns a weapon shop right about the outskirts of town. Obviously it’s an underground one since they do not allowing civil possession of firearms, but that’s beside the point. During the night three days ago, we had a visit from the cops. However, it wasn’t at all because of the smuggling of firearms as we expected, but a mere information scout of our neighborhoods. They were asking whether everything was alright where we lived. We simply answered yes. The policeman said thank you and goodbye, but his gestures were obviously proving he was thinking otherwise. The next morning as I went back from school, I met that same officer again. However, he wasn’t one who was calm, tall and dead serious, but merely a dismembered corpse with his legs and arms eaten, left rotting at the front of my doorstep. I was obviously shocked and surprised. As I entered my house, I saw my family. My mother, my father, and my little brother who stayed at home because he was sick, all transformed into those things that you saw today. They chased after me, viciously, and I really thought I was going to die. However, the police reinforcements arrived in time and killed them, right before my eyes. They did a number of tests on me, and decided I was clean. However, they ran into a lot of trouble, seeing as how most of the neighbors have also become one of those things. The entire squad was almost wiped out. It was the price in order to purge my neighborhood, but I wonder what happened, and what would come next. I stashed with me a bunch of weapons and supplies and left to the nearby suburbs. Over the next day I spend my time observing the situation, mostly on public police records. It seemed they were looking for me, as the only witness to what happened. However, I decided to stay hidden. At the end of that day, I thought nothing else was going to happen. So the next day I went back to school, with chaotic thoughts in my mind. Just to be safe, I packed my shotgun with me. It turned out this way, instead of all I hoped for. Hosuka-chan, I am sorry because I could have, and should have informed you of what happened earlier. If I had, you might have been able to save your family, your friends, and maybe even yourself from this fate!” Fushigi passionately grabbed Hosuka’s arms, as she was still sitting perfectly still, seemingly frozen in shock. “Do you understand now Hosuka-chan?” It was obvious Hosuka didn’t opt to answer, but Fushigi’s pushing attitude caused her to be on the verge of tears.
“You shouldn’t treat a girl like that you know, they are delicate beings.” Those words went right through his mind. As Fushigi looked to his front, he spotted Futaka, one hand holding the empty pistol and another hand on her damaged ribs. Her wounds have stopped bleeding, but that doesn’t mean she could’ve moved as freely as before after just an hour of rest. “One day you’ll learn to treat your lady right. I just hope that day don’t come when it’s already too late though.”
As Fushigi sat there flabbergasted, Futaka slowly approached Hosuka and lifted her up by the back. Despite it was hard, she managed to do it with half of her arm. Carefully turning the crying underclasswoman to face her, Futaka whispered into Hosuka’s ears. Fushigi couldn’t have been able to hear it of course. As Futaka smiled, ending her speech, Hosuka seemed to have regained some of her liveliness. Fushigi wanted to ask about it, but he was interrupted:
“We need to agree upon a plan.” It was Nan. Obviously as an android, he needn’t sleep nor rest. What he needed to do was to complete his mission, at least to the most of his abilities. And in order to do that, a plan is what he was hoping the most for. “Have I gotten everyone’s attention?”
After a brief look-around, Futaka answered “yes”.
“Glad to hear it. Now, seeing as how we have no chance of continuing to stay a refuge at this school, I suggest we escape.” What Nan said wasn’t actually out of this world or relatively new or something, since obviously they’ve all thought about it. However, they decided to keep listening. “That biggest question as would be to where? Based on the speed of the spread of the “plague”, I’m sure we would only stay safe overseas. However, that is not our biggest concern. Even getting to the source of information we needs is hard, so we have to prioritize that first. Once we have the vital information proceeding would be less random. Do you understand me?”
“Yes we do.” Fushigi spoke for behalf of the other three. “But then where are we going to get this kind of information from? We can barely move around the school without getting killed.”
“That much is true. I suggest for the mean time we should stay here for about a few more hours to observe and specify the behavior of these infected. Then we shall decide on our next move.”
“Hey look, it seems like they’re enjoying the rain.”
…
“Do you consider this a bad situation to be in?” Asked Hiraki, as he was sitting calmly as the rain drops passed through his face. It didn’t help much that he was wet as hell, but at least he was luckier than those who had their chances.
“Well it’s raining on my butt, so yes.” Taiyo replied, as he wipes some water off his glasses. “Yeah, we’re miserable, but not as miserable as the one who was supposed to be able to get some rest for the next 2 hours, but can’t now because it’s raining cats and dogs.” Following Taiyo’s eye sigh, one could clearly see the disappointed Akari, flustered by his bad luck.
“I shouldn’t have thought that going first was better.” Akari and the other three drew straws in order to determine the order of which they would be able to take rests in order to not overwork them in this situation while others stay on guard. Akari was first, only to meet this rain which screwed up his entire nap. “Even now nature is trying to piss me off.”
“And don’t know about you guys but… I’m kind of afraid right now.” Shiroi said, as he was the one who was sitting on the highest chair, able to oversee the infected trying to break through the barricade.
“Yes I know, and we are scared also, but seriously, did that point need to be emphasized considering hundreds of hungry “zombies” right in front of our faces?” Taiyo was being short-tempered as usual. Though he rarely gets out of control, his rage can sometimes prove disastrous. “Does it seem like we don’t have enough trouble in our hair already? What is it with you and your constant bickering of useless trivial topics?”
“Dude… do you remember that one time, when I showed you the story?” Suddenly, Akari broke the gloomy air by asking a totally unrelated question. The question was clearly directed at Taiyo, making him turn around instead. “You know… that one about all the crazy adventures?”
“I do.” That suddenly hit his mind, as Taiyo turned his grumpy facial expression into a satisfied smirk. It seems he had found his breaking point. “You wrote “when faced with a global epidemic, one would always eventually collapse mentally. If one doesn’t recover, one dies, if one did, one had a chance”. So are you telling me this is my breaking point?”
“Yes I am.”
“I see.” Calmed down, Taiyo realized that Akari was right. He snapped just then. Without being calm and rational, there would be no way they were going to make it out alive as a team. “Well then…”
“I reached it years ago.” Hiraki said. He wasn’t kidding, they knew. Just looking at his complexion through out the whole ordeal, and a simple conclusion could have been drawn: he’s not afraid to kill. “Have you two reached it yet?”
“I have, a few hours ago when the thought of losing all of my girls went through my mind. Right now they might all have gone, but I’m still here. I’m still fighting.” Akari screeched his voice in resentment, but eventually his tone became loose. It was as if he reached a state of ultimate consciousness every time that topic was brought up. “Shiroi, I don’t believe you have though, seeing as how you’re still shaken when you pulled the trigger.”
“I don’t know. Am I even obliged to know? Isn’t it enough that I have to kill all those people?” Shiroi struggled with his own mind. His life was rough yes, but he had experienced little traumatic experience, unlike the other three. It was obvious he would reach that point soon enough, but that was just what bothered them. “What else are you expecting me to do, becoming a cold hearted killer?”
“Actually, that is exactly what I’m worried about.” Saying unexpected things, Akari gave out the impression of bewilderment. Though originally he never thought about it, the possibility was becoming larger and larger, to the point of him no longer being able to keep those thoughts secret. “I’m afraid that when you snapped, you end up killing us all. Which if actually happen I wouldn’t be so surprised.”
A shocking development in the conversation left Shiroi speechless. Surely he watched enough movies that show how crazy people can be when it comes to such a crisis. During plane crashes, airplanes jacks or other life threatening situations, people always had that spark of hope of when they get out, praying for a better future once they survived. However, the situation they are in wasn’t about surviving. It was about the possibility of having to live in fear and chase for the rest of their lives, slowly dying out of hunger, infection or of death bites.
“I understand.” He replied. It wasn’t such a strong and reliable one, but at least it put them in a more stable mood. All the while they actually have been keeping it very quiet, only whispering to one another while having a conversation, as to not draw any unnecessary attention from “them”. “Do you think there are any other survivors in our school?”
“Personally I’d like to believe that, but the chances of it are slim.” Hiraki plainly said. Even though it sounded cold, it was the hard truth that they would have to confirm sooner or later. “Though this is a rather small school, places to be made fort of, such as where we currently are, reaches plenty in number. However it is highly doubtful that one could acquire much firearms, or even weapons, in a school like this to be able to defend themselves from “them”.”
“That’s a good point. Well we know that the nurse was ok before, and her scent repellant surely was keeping them away. However I don’t even know if it’d last long. Let’s just pray for her that her supplies were enough, and that when things settle down “them” wouldn’t notice that airtight room.” Akari turned around, trying to assess the situation that they were in and whether if they can get any help. Of course he knew his odds, but there was nothing else for them to do under this heavy rain. Not to mention the fact that what they put up for a temporary roof was nothing but torn pieces of old clothing sew together. “Then there’s Hanayome, running around with a katana. If she can hold her own and hide out of sight she might still be alive. Is there anyone I’m forgetting?”
“Futaka," Taiyo quickly reminded him. His expression seemed somewhat uneasy. “She was the original survivor we encountered. It’d be a miracle if she was able to survive with an out-of-ammo century accurate pistol, but if she did, then she’s probably our best bet.”
“Of what exactly are you suggesting?"
“Well, it would be good if we were able to connect ourselves with the most people. Surely you had that idea in mind too right? Who knows how this whole thing might turn out? Who knows how long are we going to stay like this? Who even fucking knows we’re alive.”
“That last one was completely unrelated.”
“Yeah I know.”
They realized that they were just afraid of losing their senses…

Re: Horror of Ventus Damned
I haven't watched HotD so I don't know if this is an HotD reference. But I was thinking, it's like Left 4 Dead except for the part that there is an extra survivor, Futaka, and some possible survivors in the story

Re: Horror of Ventus Damned
This is a HotD reference simply for being in a high school
The "infection" system is based on L4D (somewhat), other than that there should be nothing else in common
